Laws and Regulations

In 2000, two bills were adopted by the Quebec National Assembly. The Food Products Act granted the authority to proceed with the food traceability process up to consumer's plate, and the Animal Health Protection Act targeted animal identification. The Regulation respecting the identification and traceability of certain animals stems from the latter and governs the identification of animals kept and raised in Québec.

On January 1st, 2001, federal regulations came into effect concerning compulsory cattle identification using approved tags prior to the animals being moved from the farm.

Under these regulations, stakeholders must meet certain requirements. Please consult the table of these duties and responsibilities for you sector of activities Obligations
